Chapter 4

Patrick lay close to Jesse and listened to his breathing. It was deep and steady as he slept. Patrick had no such luck finding sleep. Tomorrow morning he'd drive into Newport with Jesse to pick up the parts he'd needed to fix the car. As soon as he got back, he'd fix it and then...the end. He turned his head and looked at Jesse. Jesse was the first man who had ever made him feel anything since Gareth. And he was about to lose him before there was any chance Jesse might come to love him.

He knew it was a lot to ask, to expect a guy like Jesse to stay here with him in this small town. Jesse would go home to Newport, but Patrick suspected he wouldn't stay there long. The call of the big city would probably lure him away again. Or not. It was too soon for Jesse to know.

Patrick turned on his side away from him. Maybe he should start to prepare for the separation. They'd spent a lot of time making love, and soon, he'd be alone again. It was nice having Jesse here, eating with him and sleeping with him. But he'd let go. He wouldn't ask Jesse to stay. If Jesse wanted to be with him, maybe he'd come back. Or most likely, he'd meet someone else and put all this behind him.

He got out of bed and went to the window. The sun was coming up. It was going to one of those chameleon-type days where the sun deceived you into believing it was warm when it was actually cold as hell. Soon the snow would come and it would get dark early. He hated the winter.

Patrick walked into the living room and picked up his phone. He pressed the speed dial for Liam. Liam never went to sleep before noon. He was always worried someone would murder him in his sleep and he felt the dark made him vulnerable.

"Patrick?" Liam picked up on the third ring. "What's wrong?"

Liam knew Patrick wouldn't bother phoning him otherwise.

"I got a guy here who needs some protection. Long story but, in short, he tried to get away from his violent ex partner in crime, stole his ride and I found a pocketful of gems under the caddie."

"Shit."

"Yeah."

"We talkin' diamonds, man?"

"Yep."

"What do you need?"

"We're going to call to make a trade. We give the asshole back his car and his jewels in exchange for him never bothering this guy again."

"Sounds like one is getting a much better deal."

"My friend just wants to be free of him."

"Sounds familiar. Gareth is still with us."

Patrick swallowed. There was silence. Had Liam known all along? "So," he managed, "can I count on you?"

"You know the answer, brother. But why not just whack him?"

"You know I don't do that shit. I'm not asking you to do it either."

"Okay. This guy packing with friends?"

"I think he's got mob connections but just little fish."

"I'll bring the core army. Say when, brother?"

"Stand by, okay? I'll give you a call.
